The North - West Passage,1874
Tate Gallery
London, England

In this painting an old mariner sits with his daughter, who is reading of his past adventures. It was subtitled as 'It might be done and England should do it' (Ash plate 32). The man who sat for this painting was an actual mariner named Captain Edward Trelawny. He despised modern culture and refused to sit for Millais, but Effie was able to convince him. Trelawny was not a drinker and was angered by the tumbler of brandy by his side.
